SPS BBQ and Ride 5/8/2010

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Moms.

We had a terrific BBQ at Skagit PowerSports on Saturday, May 8. Special thanks to Jerry, Connie, Perry and Patrick for helping with the set up. Helpers through out the day included Roy and Laurie. We were visited by Dale, Kevin, John F, Wendy, Kem and Sherrie. Since this was the first BBQ of 2010 it was time to renew the food serving permit for Skagit PowerSports. Edie made a special trip to pick up the ice and a new grill brush. The Health Department Inspector came by about mid-day. We passed inspection with honors. We had everything we needed and were following all food preparation and serving regulations. Great job everyone. I asked the inspector if we could do anything better. She indicated that we could turn our wash station about 90 degrees to make it was easier to get to, but it was not a requirement. She was very pleased with our whole set up. Thanks Edie and Bill for providing all of the necessary items. We also had the pleasure of serving most of the Skagit PowerSports staff on the day; Cassandra, Scott, Doug, Jose, Holly, Fernando, Pete, Pete, Edie, Trudy and Bill.

Roy had a nice card for Gloria. We passed it around for everyone to sign. He will be heading to Victoria today to deliver and read the card to Gloria.

We also collected $130 and some change on the day. It was warm and sunny. Since it was so nice, John G decided that we should cook up a bunch of dogs and burgers around 1:30. Then, when those were gone, we would be done for the day. While John G was returning the uncooked food to the office crew, the cooked food supply was distributed to hungry customers. After cleanup, Roy, Patrick and John G went off for a short ride down Highway 9 that ended at Snowgoose Produce for a fabulous waffle cone. Upon arrival we saw this large puddle of electric blue on the ground. Wonder what flavor that was? Turned out to be Blueberry Cheesecake. So while we were enjoying our maple walnut, cookies & cream and death by chocolate it seemed like every kid in the place had a cone of that electric blue ice cream. I wonder if they liked the taste.

After ice cream Roy headed for home. Patrick and John G went off on a mission to ride to the summit of Mt Erie. After some wandering about we found the entrance off Heart Lake Road. Now this road is not for the squeamish. It was barely wide enough for the minivans and pickups we passed on the way up. The incline was quite steep and there were numerous very tight 180 degree turns that continued straight up. As we were approaching the top we pulled off to a turn out that was the last chance parking before the summit. Wow! There was a spectacular view of Campbell Lake, Heart Lake, Pass Lake, the waterway leading to Deception Pass and the surrounding scenery. The trees in the distance were blocking our view of the Deception Pass bridge, but we could tell where it was. Patrick and John G motored on up to the final summit. Parking there was tricky, even for just two bikes. The view from the summit was facing North. We could see the refinery by Anacortes and some of the snow covered mountain peaks beyond the foothills to the East. The trees had grown quite high and there really was no unobscured view available.

Our ride down the mountain was uneventful and a bit easier than the ride up. Patrick and John G split off on Highway 20. Patrick went on to Mount Vernon while John G headed home to Bellingham via Chuckanut Drive. That was our best weather day of the year so far and a fabulous ride.
