May 30th Second Annual Jim Shermerhorn Poker Run - 5-30-2009 |
| Second Annual Jim Shermerhorn Poker Run Synopsis |
| Jim was a member of Northwest Cascades, STAR Chapter #154. His battle with a brain tumor ended in March 2007. He was survived by his wife Kristi plus sons Alex and Ryan. We hold the event each year to remember Jim and to support his family. Our chapter donates our portion of the 50/50 pot, 50% of the registration fee plus all BBQ donations to Jim’s family. In prior years, the 50/50 winner, high hand winner and low hand winner have also donated their amounts to Jim’s family. This is our largest fund raising event of the year. We are very proud to be able to carry on this tradition with the assistance of our supporting dealership, Skagit PowerSports. Each year, Skagit PowerSports has provided the BBQ, food and supplies necessary to carry out the event. In addition, they have also donated some very nice merchandise to be given away to lucky ticket holders. Northwest Cascades, STAR Chapter #154 would like to say thank you to Bill and Edie Cameron and thank you to all of the staff at Skagit PowerSports. For 2009 we combined the Jim Schermerhorn Poker Run with the Skagit PowerSports Open House and Film Festival. Combining the events worked well for the Poker Run plus Skagit PowerSports. • The event begins with planning in the fall of the prior year. Checkpoint stops are selected and the route is planned. The event flyer is revised for the next year. Then we need to identify the volunteers. Previously, we targeted the Saturday following Memorial Day. For 2010 that would be Saturday, June 5, one of our monthly meeting dates. Bill enjoyed combining the Skagit PowerSports Open House with the Poker Run and may wish to do that for 2010. We increased the quantity of participants from 52 in 2008 to 92 in 2009. See you all in 2010. |
